A Weekend Getaway - Part 2

On Saturday, along with visiting Schooner Cove, we also went to a couple of other beaches: Florencia Beach and Long Beach (and they aren't kidding....it is a looong beach).

Florencia Beach had a look-out point which gave a nice view of the big waves....and the tiny little surfer guys in them.

Long Beach is such an awesome sandy beach, I'd love to go back in the summer and spend some time there!

Later on that day, after Jonathan had gone back out to surf some more, Edison and I went for a walk around Ucuelet. I knew it was going to rain the next day, so I wanted to get out there and take advantage of the weather while we had it. Of all the days to wear my hair down (instead of in its usual ponytail), this was not the day! The town has some cute little stores, and it was a nice walk; however, it was soooo windy. By the time I got back my hair was one crazy, tangled mess! Here are a few of the pictures I took while we were out on the town:

On Sunday we said goodbye to the sunshine and hello to the usual rain. After I made bacon and eggs in the world's smallest frying pan, Jonathan and I headed in to the town of Tofino to check things out. I would have liked to have walked around the town, but it was raining quite hard. So we drove around and then parked and got out at the stores we wanted to go in. I'm sure the scenery is really nice in Tofino, but unfortunately it was so cloudy it made it hard to see the ocean and mountains. This was the one and only picture I got in town that day:

The only negative part of the weekend was that Edison did not sleep well the whole time we were there. He has two teeth that look really close to breaking through and I think between the teething and the sleeping in a new place, he was thrown off a little. He didn't sleep for more than 2-3 hours at a time each night and for some reason he decided that 5am was a good time to wake up for the day. Both days I spent from 5-7am trying to convince him to go back to sleep for a bit. So I was definitely tired by the end of the weekend.

By Monday morning, Jonathan was sore and surfed out. Once Edison was up for the day we started packing, cleaning, and making our way back home. It was a really enjoyable weekend and we are definitely looking forward to going back again!

A Weekend Getaway - Part 1

This past weekend, Jonathan, Edison and I headed off to Tofino for a fun weekend getaway. Jonathan and a few friends planned to go and spend the weekend surfing...and I decided to tag along. I was eager to get out of the house and give Edison and I a change of scenery.

We left bright and early on Friday morning (6am = yuck!) so that we could catch the 8am ferry and still get to Tofino in the afternoon. The journey to Tofino is quite enjoyable. I have to admit I was pretty sick of the ferry when we lived in Victoria and I used to dread taking it. But now enough time has gone by that I no longer hate the ferry. On a long trip, the ferry is actually kind of nice because it breaks up the driving and gives you a chance to get out and stretch your legs. After Jonathan, Edison and I had a snack, we wandered around the ferry looking for a good place to sit and let Edison explore. We stumbled upon a kids play area.....never having had a kid before, I didn't even know the ferries had these. Edison had a great time playing on the cars and he even went down the slide a few times!

Beep Beep!

Head first!

Jonathan and I didn't realize that the drive to Tofino goes up through a higher elevation, so we were quite surprised to see snow along the way! Edison was getting restless in the car seat and I needed to stretch my legs, so we stopped at a rest stop and I was able to take a couple of pictures.
Snow!

Mmmm, Starbucks

We were very excited to arrive at our destination, Surfs Inn, in Ucuelet. Surfs Inn has a hostel and a few cabins. We had reserved one of the cabins and were very excited to get settled in after the long trip. Our cabin had a kitchenette which was perfect because we could make our own meals and didn't have to eat out. We were also quite excited that we had a barbecue on our porch and we made good use of it....we even barbecued frozen pizza (and it was yummy!).

Here is our cabin....such a beautiful setting!

On Saturday morning, Jonathan was up at the crack of dawn (literally) to go surfing with his friends. While he surfed, Edison and I caught a few more zzzz's, got up and had breakfast, and just hung around the cabin. The weather was beautiful on Saturday (extremely windy, but total blue sky), so when Jonathan came in for lunch we decided to do a few things together to take advantage of the nice weather before he went back out for an evening surf. We went on a hike down a gorgeous trail to a place called Schooner Cove. The whole trail was an elevated boardwalk so it was easy to walk, but it had lots of stairs. I wore Edison in the Ergobaby Carrier on my back and every time I went down stairs, Edison (who must have liked the bouncing) started laughing.... it was pretty cute! The forest was so beautiful, the trees were huge and did a good job of shielding us from the wind.

Schooner Cove was amazing and well worth the little trek to get down there.

Well, this is about all I have time for at the moment. I'll update with part 2 of our weekend later today.

Monday's Musings - 8 Months!

It's hard to believe that the babe turned 8 months old last week. It's so much fun watching him grow and figure things out. But at the same time, I wish time would slow down just a little because it's going by too fast. Even though I don't have to return to work until September, I can already feel it looming over me.

Edison is a very happy baby.... and a very active one. He's not really one for sitting still. He's always on the move, wanting to play, and still putting everything possible into his mouth.

He loves to talk and can get very loud at times. He's a little bit shy when we're out somewhere new or around someone he doesn't really know. But it seems that once he's comfortable, the talking begins. You can click here if you haven't seen the video of him chatting away.

I thought that by now I'd be able to report that he has started crawling....but alas, it hasn't quite happened yet. He is getting very good at pulling himself along the floor....and can go a fair distance like that. He's been going up onto his hands and knees more and more this past week and has even taken a couple of crawling strides on his knees, but he quickly falls back onto his tummy. He's also been going up on this hands and feet, with his bum up in the air....kinda like the downward dog yoga pose. It's really funny....I've yet to get a picture of him doing that, unfortunately. So I know that the actual crawling is just around the corner, and I'll bet that by the 9 month posting, he'll be crawling.

Edison still loves to stand. He spends a lot of time standing and holding onto things and will even take walking steps when you hold his hands. He still prefers standing and holding on to things, instead of being down on the floor. His balance is really good and frequently holds onto things with just one hand so that he can use his other hand to get a toy into his mouth.

He still hasn't shown any signs of teeth coming in yet. It's funny because we originally though he would teethe early...due to how hard he was chewing on anything and everything. However it seems he's actually in no hurry on the teething front. It doesn't stop him from eating lots of different foods though. He's now eating three meals a day and I'm starting to expand his finger food repertoire. He really likes cheerios, banana chunks, toast, pancakes, little pieces of meat....and he's hit and miss with cheese. The only thing he's had that he really didn't like was scrambled eggs...but I'll try again with eggs another day.

Here are a few pictures of his cute 8 month old self.
